Durham Police Academy

The Durham Police Department’s Training Academy prepares recruits for a career in law enforcement through a rigorous six month academic and physical training program. Recruits receive a salary while attending the academy. Recruits do not live at the academy but travel back and forth for training each day, Monday through Friday. Due to the intensive training program, recruits are not allowed to hold other types of employment or attend other educational classes while attending the academy.Durham Police Department's police academy is among the most rigorous in North Carolina requiring recruits to successfully complete 920 hours of training. That's more than 300 hours beyond the State Requirement.


The Durham Police Department’s Training Academy is located on Durham Tech's North campus at 2401 Snow Hill Road, Durham, NC 27712.
Upon graduation, all new officers are on probation for six months and are assigned to the Police Training Officer (PTO) Program for 12 to 16 weeks. A police officer's first duty assignment is as a patrol officer.
